The Council will host a "Workshop on Youth and Young Adult Gambling on April 21, 2010, at the Mississippi Center for Nursing in Madison, Mississippi. Dr. Jeffrey Derevensky will be presenting.

There is abundant information that today’s youth view gambling as a socially acceptable, enjoyable and exciting form of entertainment. Once relegated for adults, gambling has become normalized and widely accepted among both adolescents and adults. The proliferation of different types of gambling and their ease of accessibility has resulted in more adolescents gambling with some experiencing significant gambling-related problems. This workshop will explore and address the many issues around youth gambling, co-morbidity issues, prevalence data, Internet gambling, assessment strategies, existing prevention tools and various intervention techniques for reaching and helping adolescents and young adults.

Jeffrey L. Derevensky, Ph.D., is a child psychologist, Professor of School/Applied Child Psychology and Professor, Department of Psychiatry at McGill University. He is a clinical consultant to numerous hospitals, school boards, government agencies and corporations. Dr. Derevensky has published widely in the field of youth gambling, is on the editorial board of several journals, and has testified before government bodies in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Norway. Dr. Derevensky is co-director of the McGill University’s Youth Gambling Research & Treatment Clinic and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors.
